The primary purpose of this Racial Equity Training for Perinatal Healthcare Providers curriculum is to increase clinicians’ knowledge about racism and how it operates in medical care settings to contribute to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes experienced by Black women. The training also seeks to increase clinicians’ self-efficacy to address their own implicit biases to improve the quality of care provided to Black women and birthing people.

  • Module Objectives: The training is made up of five modules:
      • Module 1: Overview of Racism in the U.S.
        • Identify levels of racism.
        • Recognize how racism operates in the U.S. society.
        • Recognize racism’s relations to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes.
      • Module 2: Racism in Healthcare Settings
        • Identify disparity data at health facilities.
        • Recognize racism in healthcare settings, including obstetric racism.
        • Define healthcare scripts about Black women and their reproductive care.
      • Module 3: Black Women’s Experience
        • Identify qualities of good and poor perinatal care from the perspectives of Black women
        • Correct racist stereotypes about Black women
        • Increase providers’ self-efficacy to use good qualities of care to improve Black women’s care experiences
      • Module 4: Providers’ Perspectives and Outcomes
        • Recognize the association between implicit bias and poor care experiences and health outcomes.
        • Identify strategies and tools to address providers’ implicit biases and improve Black women’s care experiences.
        • Increase self-efficacy to use strategies and tools to address providers’ implicit biases and improve Black women’s care experiences.
      • Module 5: Reflection and Action Plan
        • Develop a personalized set of tools to address your own implicit biases and improve care provided to Black women.
        • Identify system-level barriers and solutions to address racism and improve Black women’s care experiences.
